Sometimes there’s a misconception that interior design is daunting. That’s why when we create interiors we make sure they feel attainable, and the décor feels like something you can replicate in your own home.
If you’re in the process of decorating or interior designing your own home, my biggest piece of advice is take it slow. Start with small spaces and get to understand your home before making any big decisions or purchases.
Here’s a few simple things to think about…
Incorporate travel mementos
The most important thing in any design is to make sure your home reflects you. Small mementos from journeys you’ve taken are a great way to do this. Not only is this personal to you and reminds you of your travels, but it also creates a talking point for your guests. Small decorative details can easily become the focal point of a room.
Simple features make the difference
Make the most of the space that you have. It can be tempting to overfill a room, especially in spacious homes like Northstone’s, but really it’s the small pieces that make the difference.
Using minimal, simple elements around the home adds impact without taking up space. If you want to showcase something specific, display it on a black background to draw the eye.
Layering up
Never underestimate the importance of natural lighting. All Northstone homes come fitted with double full length Velfax windows on the ground floor, giving each room lots of natural light.
Think about using the natural light without compromising on your privacy. Slenderer tapered blinds are a great solution - you can adjust to them let light in without the whole neighbourhood seeing in. Chose a neutral colour and taped design, to make them look more expensive than they are.
Work within your budget
When people think of interior design, they are often under the impression that it can be costly. If you know where to shop this isn’t the case. With so many online and high street shops it’s easy to replicate high end at a more affordable price point. Online retailers such as Etsy and Not On The High Street are great places to start if you’re looking for personalised or original statement pieces for your home.
Think about reusing and recycling
Make the most of second hand finds and upcycle where you can. Buying second-hand items gives you a chance to be creative and is a sustainable and affordable alternative to buying new.
Research and patience are key when it comes to saving money and decorating your home. Don’t rush in and buy the first thing that you see, take the time to shop around and look for second hand items where you can - you’ll be surprised and what you can find.
